Austin Che 6/1/95 Stupidity Why am I writing this paper again? I have already written this paper once. However, the first time I wrote this paper, I had made a few mistakes. I can now learn from the stupid things that I had previously done. This is exactly what history is and what we learned this year. Many different kinds of topics have been covered in World Core. These topics can all be linked by stupidity. Humans aren't perfect. Errors will occur. History is a record of past errors, so hopefully we can improve and be a little smarter than our ancestors. Unfortunately, the world is still stupid today. Currently, the world is facing huge problems that have been caused by the follies of many. For examples, some people are brainless and use drugs which makes them lose more brain cells. These people usually can't get work so they contribute to our problem of feeding and caring for homeless. Another problem is sex. As a result of sex between stupid people, AIDS is now a growing problem and more stupid people are born to spread their crazy ideas. However, most of the year was spent studying the stupidity of people before us. The next unit was about if people could be trusted to govern. Many philosophers with differing opinions have been studied. They have different ideas about whether humans are smart enough to rule. For example, democracy is based on people not being stupid, while autocracy doesn't require any brains. Democracy works for educated people while anyone can follow the leader in autocracy. This theme was explored tn the book Lord of the Flies when the kids proved their own stupidity by killing each other. Next was the Industrial and French Revolution. During the Industrial Revolution, due to the creative inventions of some, others were drastically forced to change their lifestyle. People had to work in factories like mindless animals. This shows that the brilliance of people may not always be for the better. We may need the brains of stupid people. For example, during the French Revolution, peasants revolted against the noblemen and absolute monarchy. The peasants had great thoughts about overturning the government but even after many Frenchmen were killed by their own kind, France stayed as a monarchy. Some people we studied weren't so stupid. This was shown by imperialism and nationalism. During this time, countries stupidly fought for colonies not caring at all for the welfare of the colonies. The colonies had to give all their resources to the mother country. It was unreasonable for the mother countries to think that the colonies would just give everything up like slaves. These colonies have proven by regaining their land that they can think for themselves The last unit proved the world could be very very stupid at times. In the "Merchant of Venice", Antonio showed his lack of judgement by trusting his life on luck. Everyone else was stupid in not recognizing Portia dressed as the judge. Antonio risked his life so Bassanio could marry Portia and Bassanio couldn't even recognize his wife. The next book, All Quiet on the Western Front showed how stupid World War I was. Both sides fought without knowing what they were fighting for. And in the end, everyone dies without anything being accomplished. The Versailles Treaty was the stupid end to this pointless war. The Allies couldn't possibly think Germany would anywhere like this treaty. The Germans were blamed for this war when neither side was at fault. The most idiotic thing of all was not enforcing the treaty and letting Hitler gain power. After Hitler gained his power and the second pointless war started, people finally resisted the change into a stupid society with a dictator. The people didn't want to lose the ability to think. Following a dictator relieves everyone from the burdens of thinking and making decisions. However, this dictatorship only works if the dictator isn't as stupid as the rest. Unfortunately, I don't think Hitler meets this qualification of a dictator. He blamed Germany for losing the war but he made many mistakes and had many chances when he could probably have won the war. For example, attacking the Soviet Union must have been his most thoughtless plan. He must not have had Mrs. Rogers for history. If he had written this paper, he might have gained what he wanted and become the ruler of the world. As the book The Power of One shows, even one person who can think can defeat many people who can't think. However, thinking too much isn't always good as was shown by the Industrial Revolution. There needs to be a balance between thinking and doing everything without thinking. But, in the world today, more people need to think; there are enough stupid people already.
